When you have a problem that requires lots of implicit communication

When its easily and sustainably available it is often faster and easier to utilize synchronous communication: face to face. And for some problems, this synchronous communication is more important than others. Discussions that utilize implicit communication are better served face to face, as utilizing the web you miss out on those valuable “signals we give each other physically, that you only get when you’re actually in a room with someone” (Johnnie Moore).

For small conversations where implicit communication is important (serious talk with your boyfriend or girlfriend is a prime example), with current technology the web isn’t always the answer because it can make it cheaper and easier to miss communicate (Mark Klein).
