Understanding motivations

why the hell is anyone doing this?”- Chris Applegate

The participation of millions of people in ‘free’ projects such as Wikipedia and Linux, where there’s no direct monetary rewards, confused quite a few people. What we learned is that people are far more than the rational actors depicted in economic textbooks, what motivates us in our decisions to participate in projects is far more complex than monetary gain. So it is important to consider the broad range of motivations that are important to getting and keeping people involved in collaborative projects:

“You’re either motivated to do something or your not. By asking people to collaborate on something, and they agree to it, they’re motivated in some way shape or form. All you have to do is try and keep them motivated.” – Chris Thorpe
